“The biggest thing was to get the W. That’s why we play. It was a collective effort.”
– Sacramento Kings center Jonas Valančiūnas told NBC Sports California’s broadcast analysts Kyle Draper and Mike Bibby.
THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, Sacramento, Calif. — Zach LaVine, the NBA’s Western Conference Player of the Week, apparently was feeling pretty good about the honor.
LaVine had 22 points off of 8 of 12 shooting from the field, made 4 of 5 shots beyond the arc, and knocked down both attempts from the foul line in the Sacramento Kings 122-98 clobbering of the Dallas Mavericks.
The Kings (32-28) are 7-4 since LaVine was traded to Sacramento from the Chicago Bulls before the deadline last month. The Kings won their fourth straight game and 3rd consecutive contest on a current 4-game road trip.
“It’s always good to be recognized,” LaVine said. “I have to give a lot of credit to the team (and) the coaches for getting me acclimated in the right system. I’m grateful.”
The Kings improved to 17-14 on the road this season and earned their 19th victory against 10 losses under the direction of interim coach Doug Christie. The Kings’ biggest lead was 32 points early in the 4th quarter.
DeMar DeRozan scored 20 points, and Keegan Murry added 18 points for Sacramento, who made 47 of 90 shots (52.2%) from the floor and 16 of 34 (47.1%) in 3-point territory.
Filling in for Domantas Sabonis, Jonas Valančiūnas controlled the paint with 14 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots. Malik Monk had 13 points and 8 assists for the Kings.
Kai Jones had 21 points and 9 rebounds while Naji Marshall added 18 points and 6 rebounds for the Mavericks (32-30, 19-13 at American Airlines Center), losers of 4 of their last 5 games. Dallas’ roster has been shattered with injuries. The Mavericks lost Kyrie Irving late in the first quarter.
Irving hyperextended his left knee late in the first quarter. He managed to shoot and make 2 free throws before he was helped off the court on his way to the locker room. The All-Star did not return.
Malik Monk went down hard on the floor and was taken to the locker room right before the end of the quarter. He made his way back on the court with 3:01 remaining in the first half.
Murray’s 3-pointer with 31 seconds before halftime gave the Kings a 60-48 advantage. Kings led 60-50 at the half after Marshall made a basket. Murray and DeRozan had 15 points apiece and LaVine added 14 in the first half.
Reserve Kai Jones had 13 points for the Mavericks in the first 24 minutes.
Trey Lyles’ bucket at the 3:31 mark of the 3rd interval lengthened the Kings’ lead to 87-57. The Kings outscored the Mavericks 34-16 in the 3rd frame. The Kings had 7 turnovers and Monk did not commit one miscue.
(The Kings) came out in the third quarter a really played a good defensive game, which to me is more important to me than making shots,” Christie said.
Sabonis underwent an MRI on March 2 and it was determined that he suffered a grade 1 left hamstring strain in the game against Houston Rockets on March 1. He will be listed as out and an update will be provided in 1 week.
