On May 23, 2025, A's call up 5 players from Triple-A Las Vegas Aviators.

“I love this team. I've played with these guys for a long time. So, it's just good to be up here.”

THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, West Sacramento, Calif. — It was a battle within itself, but the Athletics were able to end an 11-game losing streak by taking down the mammoth Philadelphia Phillies 5-4 at Sutter Health Park on May 25.

Catcher Willie MacIver’s game-winning hit drove in Lawrence Butler in the bottom of the 9th inning to seal the deal. It was MacIver’s first Major League Baseball hit of his career.

Originally from Pleasanton, Calif., MacIver, 28, is one of 5 players who were called up from the A’s Triple-A affiliate Las Vegas Aviators on May 23, strictly to “bring energy” to a team that had not won again since beating the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 13, said A’s manager Mark Kotsay.

Infielder Logan Davidson, outfielder Denzel Clark, lefthanded pitcher Jacob Lopez, infielder CJ Alexander, and infielder Logan Davidson were promoted from Sin City. They all earned the call-ups and were in many ways instrumental in helping the A’s end the 12-day drought.

“It’s the best day of my life,” MacIver told reporters following the victory over the team that currently holds the second-best record in the MLB. “I had a bunch of family and friends there. That’s who I'm really doing this for. They had my back to whole time, the grind in the minor leagues, college, high school, and travel teams.”

The A’s (23-31) ended up losing 6 out of 7 games on the homestand. They had lost 7 straight at SHP, dating back to 12-2 loss on May 11 to Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees.

The last game of the set at SHP was tied 3-3 at the bottom of the 7th inning when a volcano erupted in the form of Kotsay anger. Home plate umpire Roberto Ortiz tossed Kotsay out of the game after he complained about questionable pitches in the strike zone that were thrown to A’s outfielder Miguel Andújar.

Kotsay deliberately took his sweet time walking towards the A’s clubhouse, which is located right outside of left field. At the top of the inning, Trea Turner broke the tie with a solo round-tripper in left field.

In the 9th frame, Butler’s triple drove home Davidson to tie the game before MacIver’s single sent the outfielder home. On defense, MacIver shot down Yoán Moncada at second base.

Kotsay said his ejection had nothing to do with riling up his players, but he understands that sometimes high emotions are warranted. The manager just wanted to get that win after seeing the A’s lose 9-6 in 11 innings and 4-3 in the first of the series with the Phillies.

“Listen, no one in that room is happy about losing 11 straight games. There are obviously emotions that you know are pent up,” Kotsay told Publicity Agents. “(But) nothing was preconceived. There’s no thought process. It was just reactionary to the moment in the game. It was a big moment.”

The A’s take the field again on May 27 and 28 when they face the Houston Astros (28-25) before heading to play a 4-game set against the Toronto Blue Jays (26-27), starting May 29.

The losing streak is behind them, but MacIver said it’s a good opportunity for the A’s to win more games before returning to SHP on June 2nd to start a 4-game series with the Minnesota Twins.

“Now we go. Just keep playing hard. We’ve been playing good baseball…it just hasn’t been going our way, and all we needed was something like that (a win against the Phillies,” McIver said. “It’s like a hitting slump: You see one fall and all of a sudden you start getting a hit, hit, hit. So I am expecting us to keep this thing rolling.”
