A's starting pitcher is not too happy about the layout of Sutter Health Park.
“He's been around this league for a long time and I am going to lean on that because I think there is power in that.”
– Luis Severino,
THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, West Sacramento, Calif. — Aside from winning the series 2-1 against the host Athletics, the New York Yankees walked out of Sutter Health Park leaving carnage in the nature of 29 runs, 8 homeruns, which included 2 grand slams.
The 3-game affair was a pleasure for all to see. Especially for the many spectators who filled the stands for all three days to see superstar Aaron Judge. He hopped on an airplane to Seattle after enhancing his batting average to .409.
“Still not where we wanna be but we’re improving,” Judge said after the Yankees beat the A’s 12-2 on the last day of the set. “I think that is the beauty of this game, that’s there’s always room for improvement and always areas of your game you can try to get a little bit better at."
The Yankees improved to 23-17 overall and 10-9 on the road, while still holding a 2-game lead over the Boston Red Sox in the American League East. And oh boy did they make some progress against the A’s.
On Mothers Day, Judge hit a single to drive in 2 runs that gave the Yankees a 5-0 lead in the second inning. A’s starting pitcher, Luis Severino, was responsible for all 5 scores. The Dominican played for the Yankees from 2015 to 2023. It was the first time he faced his old team in an A's uniform.
Leading 6-0, the Yankees added insurance when Ben Rice belted his 1st career grand slam off of Mitch Spence at the top of the 5th inning. JJ Bleday’s homerun was the only highlight of the day for the A’s.
It was the 8th game this year that the A’s allowed 10 or more runs, the second most in Major League Baseball (MLB) to the Florida Marlins. Severino, who has expressed displeasure with SHP’s logistics, has a 4.74 earned-run-average this season and a 6.75 ERA on the year at SHP and 0.95 on the road, according to MLB.com.

Unfortunately, A’s reliever TJ McFarland had to exit the game with a left groin injury after tagging out a runner at 1st base. He is expected to get an MRI on Monday, May 12, according to the team’s manager Mark Kotsay.
The first day of the series, May 9, started with the explosion of the Yankees’ bat. Jasson Domínguez, 22, hit three homeruns, including a Grand Slam, leading New York to a 10-2 win over the A’s.
Domínguez smashed solo round-trippers in the third and seventh innings, while the career banger with bases loaded arrived in the 8th inning. He emerged as the youngest player in Yankees’ history to hit 3 homeruns in a single game.
Will Warren pitched 7 innings, allowed 1 run, 4 hits, 7 strikeouts for the Yankees to earn his second win of the season. Paul Goldschmidt had 2 hits, a homer, 1 run batted in, and scored 2 runs for the Yankees
A’s manager Mark Kotsay said his team was “angry” about the loss since they had been playing well the last couple of weeks.
In Game 2, the A’s fared much better against the Yankees despite a minor setback in the middle innings. Brent Rooker hit a 3-run homerun over the left field wall off of Carlos Rodón in the 3rd inning to give the A’s a 4-0 margin.
Judge hit back-to-back homers in the 4th and 6th innings to cut the lead by two runs. The Yankees scored 2 more in the 6th before Oswald Peraza’s 2-run homerun over the left field put the A’s ahead, 6-4.
In the 7th inning, Shea Langliers barely hit a 3-run shot over the left field wall to regain the lead for the A’s. To ensure the win, Kotsay brought in ace closer Mason Miller to get the last two outs in the eighth inning.
When it was the A’s turn at bat, Tyler Soderstrom hit a grounder to drive in two runs, and Langliers followed suit with a double to bring in 2 more runs that were enough to seal the victory. JP Sears pitched 5 innings, struck out 4 batters, walked another, and gave up 1 run.
The A’s finished the 6-game homestand 2-4, losing both series to the Yankees and Seattle Mariners. They are 2 games behind the Mariners in the AL West and tied for second with the Houston Astros.
The A’s will play their next 6 games on the road, starting with a 3-game series with the Los Angeles Dodgers from May 13-15. The Yankees start a 3-game set on the road against the Mariners on May 12.
The San Francisco Giants await the A’s at home for games on May 16-18. The Dodgers and the Giants have a combined record of (51-27).
