“Make no mistake. (Vivek Ranadivé) has empowered me to make critical decisions. Now will I talk to him often about different things? Absolutely, it only makes sense. There's a saying here that will be prevalent throughout my tenure and within our office: 'I want diversity of thought with unity of purpose.' That's what we going to be led by.”
– Scott Perry, Sacramento Kings President of Basketball Operations.
THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, Sacramento, Calif. — Scott Perry made his first public appearance as the Sacramento Kings' new general manager.
The news conference was held at Golden 1 Center. He was accompanied by his wife of 39 years, Kimberly Perry.
Perry, a Wayne State University alum, did not divulge when he was assured the position that was briefly opened, no sooner than Monte McNair was separated from the franchise after the Kings were eliminated from the Play-In Tournament on April 16.
"Once the decision was made by the Kings organization to move forward and make a change with that position, things can come together rather quickly because both sides know one another," Perry shared with NBC NEWS RADIO and Publicity Agents.
Perry continued, "You know what you're getting. They know what they're getting with me - a proven leader, someone who's done this job before at a high level. "
Notably, King's owner and chairman, Vivek Ranadivé, was not present at the media event, so Perry went solo at his introductory presser. He did release an April 21 statement after it was announced that Perry would shepherd the team.
"Scott brings a wealth of experience, a sharp basketball mind, and a strong track record of building talented rosters,” Ranadivé stated. “He shares our commitment to developing and sustaining a winning culture, and I am excited to welcome him back to Sacramento.”
Perry did say in front of local reporters that he and Ranadivé have been in contact with each other over the years, and talks escalated over the last 3 months.
"That three months allowed me and Vivek to establish a relationship that was built on respect and understanding. We learned each other's work styles and values," Perry said.
Perry was momentarily the Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations with the Kings in 2017 before taking a job with the New York Knicks. He has 25 years of front office experience.
"This time I will be here longer than three months," Perry said.
Perry has a Sampson-like task in stabilizing an NBA team that has made the playoffs once in the last 19 years, as recently as 2023.
The Kings still have fumes from Mike Brown's firing on Dec. 27, trading De'Aron Fox in February, finishing with a 40-42 record. Brown was 13-19 when he was dismissed. He was able to lead the team back to the playoffs in his first season as head coach, something that was not accomplished the previous 16 seasons.
Now Perry has to piece together his own front office staff, talk with current employees of basketball operations, and decide what direction to go in terms of a head coach. From there, the makeup of the team has to be addressed. He acknowledged that the team needs a point guard, athleticism, and size.
Perry said, "No," that he was not yet elevating Doug Christie to the head coaching position, signaling that he is weighing his options before making a decision on what Perry claims is a coveted situation. It is Perry's understanding that he has the authority to make "critical decisions" on his own, he said, but it would be with a common goal: An all-out effort to win basketball games.
"I understand and know the environment of the Sacramento Kings," Perry told Publicity Agents. "We have a shared vision. And again, that shared vision and mandate is to build a platform that's going to offer sustainable success and winning for this organization that this community richly deserves."
